In the late 1960s, we knew rhythm machine which is commercially included in organs and were intended to attend the organist. This was the pioneer of drum machine. The successful drum machine was the Rhythm Ace at that time, which was produced by Ace Tone. Ace Tone itself was later known as Roland, which became the great company of music instrument especially drum. The early drum machines were often called as rhythm machine.

Raymond Scott created Rhythm Synthesizer in 1960 and Bandito the Bango Artist a kind of drum machine. Almost all those kind of modern machines are sequencer with a sample playback or component of synthesizer which focuses on the reproduction of drum timbers as well as the sound of traditional drum or percussion instrument.

The first machines of drum used the analogue sound synthesis rather than sampling of digital to produce the sound. The sound of snare drum would be created using a burst of white noise, whereas, the sound of bass drum would be created using the sine waves or other basic of waveforms. In this case, the production of sound perhaps not be very close to the real drum instrument.

There are specific sounds of percussion modules that can be created by trigger pads, pickups, or through MIDI. All of those special machines can also be controlled via MIDI. The Drum machine can be set in real time, so the user or musician specifies the moment of precise in time. The control are includes the tempo or beat, start and stop, control of volume of each sound, keys to create individual drum sound, and location of storage for a number of different beats.

In the year of 1980, the Linn LM-1 Drum Computer was released. It was the first machine to use the digital samples. Almost of the drum sound on that machine were arranged of two chips that were produced in the same time and each vocal sound was tunable individually with separate outputs. However, the sounds of crash cymbals were not available since there was a limited memory.

In the next years, the developments of drum machine were increasing widely. There were many innovations on this kind of music instrument. There are many company produces this machine. The drum machine itself usually used in the recording of pop music since the sound can be created uniquely. The drums also can be set to store the different beats in memory.
